In 1949 Pearl Primus
– dancer, anthropologist, and Black woman -- received a grant
to study dance in Africa. She continued her research throughout
the Caribbean and the Jim Crow South. The second part of award winning
choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s two-part masterpiece
traces her footsteps through the American south, exploring the blending
and sustaining of culture in all its complexity, and capturing the
depths of both pain and joy that Primus observed and recorded in
her diaries.
