Retreat With Showing

Kathryn Posin has made works for
companies as diverse as Netherlands Dance Theater 1 and 2
and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Most of her works
use new music, pairing the technical vocabulary of ballet
with rigorous musical structures. The music for this new work
is set to the writings of Rabbi Nachman, who believed in speaking
to God directly with clapping, pleading, movement and sound.
This work is for three outstanding ballet dancers all of whom
were also chosen by Suzanne Farrell, in her company, to execute
the works of Balanchine.
Kathryn Posin received a Jewish Studies
Award from the Gallatin School of NYU, where she teaches classes
in the Arts Program. The grant will enable her to make a new
dance work based on Jewish themes.

Amy Brenneman (Private
Practice, Judging Amy, Heat) returns to her theatrical
roots with Mouth Wide Open, an original performance
that explores the ecstatic, excruciating, humorous dance between
the sacred and profane in her own life. Her spiritual curiosity
has taken her from Buddhist monks in Nepal to an evangelical
church in the Mississippi Delta to the red carpet in Hollywood.
But it was in a recent hospital room that her beliefs were most
powerfully tested.
Brenneman wrote and co-created Mouth Wide Open with
longtime collaborator director Sabrina Peck (Lincoln Center
Theater, Yale Rep, Dance Theater Workshop). With their witty
and soulful style, Brenneman and Peck have created a piece that
celebrates the sorrows and the joys of being human, finding
divinity in surprising places and ways.
Mouth Wide Open was developed at the Yard during a
two-week residency. .

well.”

with the early pioneers of modern dance (Martha Graham, Hanya Holm,
Anna Sokolow, Jose Limon) throughout the 1930’s, ‘40’s

dance. The Ensemble recently received a Gold Star Award from the Massachusetts

Kay Matschullat directs a music-theater
work-in-progress
Saturday, August 28, 6:30
Sunday, August 29, 6:30
Kay Matschullat directs
singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega in a new music-theater piece
based on the writings of Carson McCullers. Vega conjures
the hearts that McCullers painted in the prose of her work
and acted out through her passionate life. As she speaks and
sings her way through a labyrinth of love, we experience the
comedic Carson, the pained Carson and the provocateur she
became. In trying to explain, she strives to conquer the demons
that intrude on the course of love, which for her and her
characters never runs smoothly. Seamlessly moving from spoken
word to song and back again, Vega channels McCullers in a
way that reveals the meeting of two souls through a work of
art. The summer of 2010 will bring the artists to the Weston
Playhouse, Steve Stettler Artistic Director, where they
will develop the piece, which will be performed at The YardArts!
Festival and then premiere at Rattlestick
Theater, David Van Asselt Artistic Director, in New York
in May 2011.
