H.T. Chen & Dancers are The Yard's 2011 Company-in-Residence. The company is known for infusing Western modern dance with the strength and beauty of Asian aesthetics. H.T. Chen & Dancers will be presenting their evening long performance featuring not only excerpts from work created during their three week residency on Martha's Vineyard, but also showcasing a contemporary work using community members from the artist-in-the-schools program. At The Yard, Off Middle Rd, Chilmark Doug Elkins and Friends' "Fraülein Maria" At The Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center FRAULEIN MARIA celebrates Rodgers & Hammerstein's timeless songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC as re-imagined by acclaimed choreographer Doug Elkins. Set to the 1965 movie soundtrack, Elkins' affectionate humor shines through his idiomatic tips of the hat to such dance legends as Martha Graham, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. He merges modern and popular dance forms including hip hop and "vogueing," reinventing this beloved classic into an edgy and fun cabaret romp. At The Martha's Vineyard Performing Arts Center, PigPen Theatre Company Presents The Yard is collaborating with ArtFarm Enterprises and Vineyard Arts Project to bring you PigPen Theatre Company's "The Old Man and The Old Moon". A two week run, with a total of eight shows, PigPen will be sharing their tale of an old man who must abandon his duties of filling up the moon every month, to cross the seas in search of his missing wife. Known for their atmospheric theatrical fables with unique blend of shadow puppetry, group movement, live music, and clever lighting effects, this is a show you do not want to miss. Both evening's productions can function separately or together and both involve the duo's trademark style of seamlessly blending music, dance, mime, and theater to unique and emotional affect. While considered by many to be a fascinating presentation of modern compositional ideas, these performances are anything but 'dry'. The Guardian UK has written, "There is a fierceness, an intelligence and a sweetness at its core which is hard to resist." Audiences across Europe have found themselves shocked by both the casual nature of the presentation, combined with uncommon precision in their performances. Most commonly known in the United States as the protégé to composer Philip Glass, John Moran has taken his partnership with Saori Tsukada and will delight the vineyard audiences with two different performances on two different nights. David Parker delights audiences from Houston to Amsterdam, Boston to Paris with performances by The Bang Group that attempt to forge elements of "high" and "low" art together. What results is an entertaining evening full of innovative composition that approaches controversial social issues with wit and optimism. The Boston Globe affirms that "Parker's work is both parody and ode, full of show-biz posturing, sweeping ballet-meets-jazz lifts and turns, and wildly imaginative partnering, all leavened with wicked humor. Bring your dancing shoes because this is a Public Dancing Allowed Event at The Yard. New to the summer season, this will be the first evening dedicated to anyone and everyone dancing the night away in our theatre. The names and faces that you have come to know throughout the summer season will be presenting their own evening of work to the island community. All artists in their own right, this year's staff, interns and community members will come together to fill the space with new work that will inspire you. The Yard's own David R. This year’s choreographers in residence hail from New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, and Minnesota. During their four week residency, the choreographers will work with their dancers to create brand new work developed while on island. Cori Olinghouse will create The Yard’s Bessie Schönberg Residency Multi-generational Performance Project, collaborating with a cast of islanders of all ages.
