THE BANG GROUP

Based in New York City, is a theatrical dance troupe devoted to choreographer DAVID PARKER’s love of rhythmic form. Directed by Parker and Jeffrey Kazin, The Bang Group tours and performs internationally as well as domestically and has been acclaimed for its humor, intelligence and heart. Parker is a 2013 Guggenheim Fellow in Choreography and has built a full-bodied dance language drawing from tap, street dance, ballet, vaudeville, silent films and MGM musicals. Among The Bang Group’s best-loved productions are “Slapstuck” a duet for two Velcro-glad gentlemen, “ShowDown”, a choreographic reimagining of “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Head Over Heels” and “Misters and Sisters”, both shows made for cabaret stages that deconstruct romantic love, and “Nut/Cracked”, a comic-subversive, neo-vaudeville version of “The Nutcracker” which has been in continuous repertory for the past eleven seasons. The Bang Group has a second home in Boston where it appears frequently through Summer Stages Dance, Boston Center for the Arts, The Theater Offensive, The Institute for Contemporary Art, First Night and others. For the past 4 seasons it has also been in residence at The Yard, a contemporary dance festival on Martha’s Vineyard. Parker curates The Yard’s “Tap the Yard: A Festival of Rhythm and Beats” with David White and Alison Manning and has also been an artist-curator for Danspace Project’s much vaunted Platform Series under the rubric “Rhythm and Humor.” He has made over 30 works on commission for other companies and college dance departments both in the United States and abroad. The Bang Group has been generously supported by The Guggenheim Foundation, The Doris Duke Foundation, The Jerome Robbins Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, The Greenwall Foundation, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Mid Atlantic Arts Fund, Arts International, Netherland-America Foundation, Fund for Mutual Understanding, 2wice Foundation, and Pentacle’s ARC program, as well as several private donors. Following its appearances at The Yard, The Bang Group goes to Philadelphia, Boston, and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Look for the premiere of its evening-length “Tap Lab” as part of the Harkness Dance Festival in the spring of 2015 in New York City.
