Can I apply to more than one of the intern positions?

Yes, you are more than welcome to apply to more than one of the intern positions. If you are doing so, please indicate in your cover letter which is your first choice, second choice etc. and why. Also, make sure to mark this information on your application form.

Do I have to be a dancer in order to apply for this internship?

No, you do not have to be a dancer, however, The Yard structures their internship so that the interns do have dance performance opportunities throughout the summer if they are interested. There are opportunities for visual artists to show work throughout the summer as well.  Regardless of whether or not you are a dancer we would love for you to apply. Anyone interested in the performing arts is eligible.

One of the references says it must be a dance reference. What if I am not a dancer and thus, do not have a dance reference?

That is perfectly fine. If you are not a dancer, then the third reference can be from someone who knows you in any arts aspect whether you are a visual artist, actor, musician, singer etc. If you are not an artist, then the third reference can be just another work or professional reference.

I am in college and interested in applying to your internship but the ending date interferes with when I start the fall semester again. Can I leave early?

Unfortunately due to the nature of our internship, we cannot allow any of the interns to leave early. This does mean that most, if not all, of our interns have already graduated from school. We have had some interns in the past who started their semester late, however, we want what is best for you and your schooling, therefore if it will not work out this year, please apply in the future.

When will I find out if I am accepted to the internship program?

All applications are due by February 15, 2018. Once all the applications have been submitted, the senior staff will review all materials and contact you via email or phone for future information about the application process. We plan to make all decisions no later than April 1st, 2018.

Where do I live during the internship?

All interns will live in the staff house on property. Interns will share a room with one other person. The house also contains a full kitchen, two bathrooms, an extra outdoor shower, living room, and laundry facilities.

Should I bring my car with me?

We prefer that those with cars bring them. We do have 2 company cars available for artist transportation, errands and one grocery store run a week.  You will want to have your own car for personal use and convenience or you will want to purchase a bus pass to get around the island.

How many days off do we get? Will I have a lot of free time?

Everyone gets most Sundays off each week. Depending on the schedule, the senior staff may also grant additional time off if requested in advance. You also have most evenings free on non-performance days.  The schedule is explained once accepted to the program.

What are some of the benefits of the internship?

Besides getting to work with great artists and arts administrators, the internship has some excellent perks. Located in Chilmark, Massachusetts on the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard, you will have  access to some of the most gorgeous private beaches, which are only a short walk or bike ride away. The interns get to enjoy a weekly farm share from local farms on Martha's Vineyard. Each intern will receive a $1,250 stipend and up to $200 travel reimbursement. Free required dance classes are available 5 days of the week and free yoga classes 7 days of the week. There are also professional performance opportunities with visiting dance companies and at events around the island. This just touches on some of the many experiences and extras you will have as an intern at The Yard.

Unfortunately at this time The Yard's Internship Program cannot accommodate international applicants unless the applicant has a student or work visa secured through his or her embassy.  Please check back for further opportunities in the future and thank you for your interest.

Possibly the most creatively fulfilling opportunity

The Yard becomes your family - you will live, work, dance, and create with an amazingly passionate and talented crop of people who will also guide you in growing as an artist, a teacher, and a better person.

Danielle Doell, 2014 Intern

After working at Dublin Dance Festival for only a few weeks, I am realizing that I am well-prepared for this position for reasons that I can only thank the Yard for. I know I have said this many times before (hopefully you aren’t tired of hearing it), but I feel very grateful to have had the experience that I did last summer and I cannot explain how much I feel it has prepared me for further experiences. From just seeing the beginnings of the "Making It: Kids Make Dance" Program, to participating in Kids Make Dance and working with Deb Damast, to finishing  and organizing various managerial tasks, and to working and refining choreographic skills; I’m amazed at how all those projects have allowed me to further my skills and abilities and have continued to carry throughout my work outside of the Yard.
Just in the second week at DDF, I was asked to organize their Youth Arts Outreach program due to what I had told them of the Yard’s educational and community programming. Now I have been leading the search in finding dance theatre companies that cater to children’s audiences, youth performing companies for outdoor flash mob performances, and even hosting children’s workshops and discussions. There’s even a space in Dublin called The Ark, a cultural centre and performance space for children, that DDF will be teaming with to host some of the events.
All I can say is, without the Yard, I might not have begun exploring these options for my career path and I just want to send the biggest thank you for allowing me to refine skills and gain experiences that I never thought I would. I never imagined I’d be where I am now, when I was just starting my internship with the Yard, but I can tell you, this definitely exceeds it.
I am definitely planning a visit to the Yard after my stay in Dublin

Ashley Stock, 2014 Intern

The Yard and a summer spent falling in love with the vineyard and calling it home. The last 4 months have been nothing but eye opening and magical. Thank you to my fellow interns, Senior Staff, and the slew of Yard artists who helped me grow in my understanding of dance and movement as a language.
