HT Chen & Dancers
Chen Dance Center worked with the Chilmark School students to create a movement piece inspired and influenced by their course material surrounding early Chinese Settlers in America.
The residency culminated in a formal evening performance at The Yard where students performed alongside professional company members in an evening of work that kicked-off The Yard's summer season.
Stefanie Batten Bland
Stefanie Batten Bland and Company worked with island schools in classroom settings to create, explore movement patterns, and learn about environmental responsibility through dance.
Company SBB also spent time with island community members exploring and researching the African American Heritage Trail, and working with the intergenerational improvisational dance group What's Written Within.
Godfrey Muwulya, dance educator, was on island for four amazing and creative weeks. He worked extensively with The Charter School's 5th and 6th grade classroom, syncing his teaching with a social studies unit on Africa. The children learned three traditional African dances from Uganda and Rwanda, had discussions about Ugandan culture, constructed traditional raffia skirts, and performed for the entire school and their parents! While on island, Godfrey also taught one day workshops for The Edgartown School and Bridge Program, Chilmark School, Home Schools, and Oak Bluffs School.
