H.T. Chen (Artistic Director/Choreographer) Born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Taiwan, H.T. Chen has created and performed over 40 works in over 100 cities and festivals in the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and Germany. H.T. Chen is a positive voice for his community; speaking with power and honesty from a distinct perspective. He has created a body of work that gives poetic voice to Asians in America, as well as a repertoire that embraces innovation and authenticity. His signature works include Hidden Voices, Transparent Hinges, Bian Dan, Warriors of Light, and Opening the Gate which were commissioned through support of the Lila Wallace Arts Partners Program, Surdna Foundation and the Rockefeller MAP. He has been on the faculty at NYU's School of Education, the Navajo Community College, the TAIPEDIA Dance Festival, and has been guest faculty at numerous U.S. colleges. H.T. Chen has served on the Board of Dance/USA, Dance Theater Workshop, Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, and was an Arts America Speaker for the U.S.I.A. to Mauritius. Mr. Chen is a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organization of Chinese Americans, and the NYC Mayor's Award for Arts & Culture.

To Mr. Chen, providing cultural arts services to the local community is as important as creating new works. The School (est. 1980) provides year-round instruction in dance and music in Chinatown, NY. In 1988, Mr. Chen established Chinatown's first performing arts venue that presents several modern dance series. newsteps, a semi-annual series, supports new choreography through showcase opportunities and production support; the Ear to the Ground series provides commissions and production support for emerging Asian artists; and Co-presentations allows the Theater and studios to support independent modern dance choreographers looking to produce or rehearse their own work. Chen Dance Center is also an important cultural hub in Chinatown and lower Manhattan, hosting forums, events, and programs by Asian-American artists.
