Sandglass Theater performs excerpts of multiple works. Autumn Portraits was originally a compelling evening-long solo puppet-and-mask performance created by Eric Bass. Eric recently handed four of his five interlocking vignettes to his daughter Shoshana Bass, who has developed a new show in which the pieces answer questions of spiritual crisis, belonging, and generational dialogue. Each of the vignettes explores one puppet character and its interplay with its manipulator, who might appear as a masked figure, or simply a voice from the sky. Eric Bass’ handcrafted rod puppets are characters in the “autumn” of their existence. In the hands of his daughter, the puppets act out their stories in precise and evocative gestures as they meet their pasts, their selves, their deaths.

Shoshana Bass refers to herself as one of the "daughters of sand", and is currently approaching the possibilities of continuing Sandglass Theater's life into the next generation. Having been raised in a traveling family of internationally acclaimed puppeteers, she has spent her life witnessing and in dialogue with artistic voices of diverse cultures, heritages, and perspectives. Her performance mediums range throughout theater, dance, circus and puppetry, which makes her an enthusiastic and flexible collaborator. Shoshana danced for five years with Frequent Flyers® Productions Aerial Dance in Boulder, CO. She is a graduate of Naropa University with an Interdisciplinary degree in performing arts, peace studies and tai chi. Shoshana has performed and choreographed in Poland, the Virgin Islands, Germany, and the United States. She currently resides in Putney, Vermont where she works with Sandglass Theater and as a freelance performer, circus instructor and choreographer.
