The Brooklyn band Red Baraat makes unprecedented, high energy south Asian fusions of jazz, hip-hop beats, rock muscle, funky go-go, and scalding hot bhangra into equally powerful music for dancing. In addition to debuting at #1 on the Billboard World Music Charts with their album, Shruggy Ji, the band has performed at the White House, Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, TED, the Olympic Games, and headlined the WOMAD Festival. Lead by Sunny Jain, who the Manchester Salon calls “the Hendrix of dhol”, they will perform work off their new album, Sound The People.

Sound The People hit the top 10 on the World Music Charts Europe and was heralded in the US as the anthem soundtrack for the South Asian diaspora. “With the migration that’s happened, there is all this varied and expressive music that has erupted from the South Asian diaspora,” explains founder and bandleader Sunny Jain. “Sound The People is a shout out to, and celebration of, this community around the world.”

The album is full of moments that hit with the force of a spiritual awakening…The funk, ska-punk, and other American forms that make their way into the music are layered intricately within the same threadwork as the ragas on which these songs are pulled from. Each piece is a gesture of cultural harmony, rendering not only genre irrelevant, but the geographic placement of those sounds.
