A riot of rules, The Lectern: rule by rule by rule playfully overturns our everyday protocols, manners, and laws and exposes them for their freedoms, limitations, and silliness. From a graduation day lecture to fashion faux pas, CLAIRE PORTER and SARA JULI explore alternate facts, rules, and changing protocols to the extreme. Using movement, text, sound, song, and a catwalk runway, the acclaimed comedic performers, Claire Porter and Sara Juli upend our day-to-day, necessary-to-survive rule-rituals, and find the hilarious in the rule-bending of our daily lives.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Claire Porter and Sara Juli are in their fourth year of creating and performing dances together, and laughing the entire time. Claire and Sara premiered an ADF commissioned piece, Small Stories at American Dance Festival in summer of 2015 where the Durham, News & Observer noted their, “delightfully funny characterizations and zany senses of physical comedy.” They performed an excerpt of the same piece in Lewiston, Maine in February 2016. T he Lectern: rule by rule by rule marks their first full evening length work together, which has been developed at generous residencies at Bates College, Connecticut College, Montclair State University, and the Dragon’s Egg in Stonington, CT along with many phone calls and trips back and forth from New Jersey to Maine. The Dance Enthusiast said about the work, “Porter and Juli are a hilarious, dynamic pair." American Dance Festival presented the World Premiere of T he Lectern: rule by rule by rule in June 2017 and the NYC premiere at New York Live Arts in October 2017. The show also toured to Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida and will be performed at Bates Dance Festival in July 2018
